Canada is a country where both French and English are official languages, so you will be able to find help in French. In particular, the Federal government always provides official information in both languages. While British Columbia is primarily an English-speaking province, don't worry, there are plenty of resources you will be able to rely on.

National resources in French

Canada knows how vital small businesses are to the economy: in 2011, small businesses represented 54,2% of the country’s gross domestic product. The government provides guidelines for companies to start in the best possible way. There is also a program with the ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada) that can help entrepreneurs get a loan to start their business.

Banks are also sharing information in French, like how to know your entrepreneur style (and why you should find someone to balance you), or how to get a loan.

Also, if you think that you're too young to start your own company, think again! Futurpreneur dedicates itself to people between 19 and 39 who wish to become business owners. They have put together a whole library of different resources, where you will undoubtedly find what you're searching.

Local structures in French

There are various organizations and networks to help you here in Vancouver.

CCF Vancouver can help you connect with other entrepreneurs and share many resources about the market.

Don’t hesitate to contact SDE to get a proper orientation about how to launch your business: it’s free and in French! In fact, they have services for every step of the entrepreneur’s journey, and they also organize business-related events.

Don’t forget to stop by the library!

While you may not think of it, Vancouver Public Library is a source of knowledge that you shouldn't neglect: not only do they have over 40,000 books and magazines in French, but they also offer over 4500 eBooks in French.

Although you can read and access all these resources through their computers, you may find it helpful to obtain a library card. It's free, and it gives you access to even more services: you can check their website from the comfort of your couch and have your selections delivered to your local branch or even borrow French eBooks online.

If you need some help to narrow your research, you can either stop by the library or, from your favourite patio, fill out the online form dedicated to small business so that a librarian can search for the best resources for you. As the questionnaire is in English, don't forget to specify if you are looking specifically for resources in French.

If you feel overwhelmed with all this research, or don’t know where to start with all the information you’ve gathered, don’t forget that your Canada Talents membership gives you access to a free face-to-face meeting with one of our volunteers, where you will be able to ask all your questions!
